How it works

  1. Type or paste your text in English. Free clips are up to 500 characters.
  2. The Greek voices are already selected, starting with Athina (female). Nestoras is the male voice. Both read your English with a Greek accent.
  3. Press generate, listen, and download the MP3.

How the Greek accent comes out

The voice is a native Greek speaker voice reading your English text, so it sounds like English spoken with a Greek accent. There is no accent filter. Results vary by word: many common words sound clear, and others are read with Greek vowels, stress or rhythm.

This page is about the spoken accent. If you are looking for Greek accent marks on written words (the tonos), that is a writing tool, not text to speech.

Typical features of a Greek accent in English

Greek has five clear vowels and some sounds English lacks, while it already has others that many learners find hard. Common features include:

  • The "th" sounds are usually easy, because Greek has both of them (as in "think" and "this").
  • Short and long vowels sound similar, so "ship" and "sheep" or "full" and "fool" can merge.
  • The "sh" sound is often said closer to "s", since Greek has no separate "sh".
  • The "h" is pronounced with a throatier sound, like the "ch" in the Scottish "loch".
  • The "r" is a light tap of the tongue.
  • Some speakers add a soft "m" or "n" before "b" and "d" in the middle of words.

Where a Greek accent voice works well

  • Travel videos about Greece and the islands, narrated in English.
  • Characters in games, cartoons and audio stories: a ferry captain, a museum guide, a cafe owner.
  • History and mythology videos in English with a Greek flavour.
  • English lessons and accent practice for actors.

Tips for a more Greek-sounding read

  • Words with "sh", such as "ship", "fresh" and "shell", show the accent clearly, because the voice leans towards an "s".
  • Words starting with "h" ("hello", "harbour", "history") bring out the throaty Greek "h".
  • Greek place names and food words are read the Greek way, which suits travel and food videos.
  • Warm, chatty lines suit a host or a cafe owner; calm, clear lines suit a museum guide or a ferry announcement.
  • Compare Athina and Nestoras on the same text and keep the one that fits.

What it does and does not do

  • It reads English text in a native Greek voice and gives you an MP3. Speed and pitch can be changed in the extra options.
  • It does not add Greek accent marks to text, and it does not translate your text into Greek.
  • It does not change the accent of your own recording. It is text to speech, not a voice changer.
  • It does not add music, echo or sound effects. Add those in your video editor.
